Last night we saw the lighting of the beacon at Churchfields. How fantastic that our United Kingdom with our long serving Queen at its head could for once be so joined together by this line of fires. Today I have chosen the Psalm set for today.

Psalm 103.1-2,11-12,19-20
1 Bless the LORD, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
bless his holy name.
2 Bless the LORD, O my soul,
and do not forget all his benefits
For as the heavens are high above the earth,
so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far he removes our transgressions from us.
The LORD has established his throne in the heavens,
and his kingdom rules over all.
20 Bless the LORD, O you his angels,
you mighty ones who do his bidding,
obedient to his spoken word.

“Bless the Lord O my soul, O my soul, worship his Holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul, I’ll worship your holy name”. Those are the words of the hymn which is based on this Psalm and what a rousing hymn it is! The Psalms are just so marvellous, as we can be taken from such highs as this, but then dragged into the depths of despair. But however low the Psalmist sinks, he always rises above it to praise his Lord. A real lesson to us in faithfulness to God as every time he realises that he has not ben abandoned by his God. No wonder in monasteries they follow the discipline of reading through the Psalms in a week or two, depending how challenging they make their daily offices.
And so we pray the Collect:

The Collect (Additional)
Risen, ascended Lord
as we rejoice at your triumph,
fill your Church on earth with power and compassion,
that all who are estranged by sin
may find forgiveness and know your peace,
to the glory of God the Father. Amen
